چکیده

We investigate the feasibility of using a combined absorption – planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) method for measuring nitric oxide (NO) number density in the freestream of a free-piston shock tunnel. The absorption coefficient is determined from the exponential decay in PLIF intensity through a uniform region of flow. The NO density is determined from the measured absorption coefficient, assuming a known pressure and temperature, determined independently. The measured NO density is insensitive to the pressure and temperature, however. The current measurements are contaminated by the variation of the spectral profile of the laser as it propagates through the flow – resulting in a large systematic error. We show that this systematic error could be nearly eliminated by using a spectrally narrower laser.

AIAA 98–2703 PLIF Thermometry of a Free-Piston Shock-Tunnel Nozzle Flow

Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence PLIF is employed to measure rotational temperatures at the nozzle exit of a free-piston shock tunnel. The ow is at approximately Mach 7 and chemical eeects have been reduced by using a nitrogen test gas and low total enthalpy 5 MJJkg. Vibrational freezing in the nozzle expansion has an appreciable effect on the nozzle-exit rotational temperature, and therefore ...

AIAA 96-2236 Comparison of theoretical laser-induced fluorescence images with measurements performed in a hypersonic shock tunnel

Planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) images of hypersonic flow over a wedge are compared with a theoretical PLIF model. The synthetic images, which include the effects of collisional quenching, are based on a perfect-gas treatment of the fluid mechanics, assuming frozen chemistry. We find very good agreement between the model and the experimental measurements.

Instantaneous Plif Measurement of Species Mole-fraction in a Varying Temperature Supersonic Flow

A theoretical model for instantaneous PLIF measurements of mole fraction in a shock tunnel ow with pressure gradients and large temperature variations is presented. The model determined the optimum excitation frequency which provided PLIF signal intensity proportional to freestream mole fraction. Experimental PLIF images of a two-dimensional slot scramjet injector with and without hydrogen fuel...

Heat transfer during transient compression: measurements and simulations

Experiments have been performed to assess the utility of unsteady one-dimensional heat conduction modelling for the calculation of heat losses during a free piston compression process. Heat transfer measurements have been obtained within a gun tunnel barrel using surface junction thermocouple instrumentation. The gun tunnel was operated with a relatively heavy piston such that the shock waves i...

Computational fluid dynamical modelling of supersonic combustion and comparisons with experiments in a free piston shock tunnel

Computational fluid dynamical simulations were carried out for a number of different scramjet configurations, which differed in their values for the location and angle of the thrust surface. These configurations were investigated experimentally in free-piston shock tunnel tests. The comparison between simulations and experiments indicated that the code successfully predicted the pressure levels...
